Paraguay started its vaccination campaign against COVID-19 with the Sputnik V vaccine at the National Hospital of Itaugua on Monday.

Health Minister Julio Mazzoleni was seen arriving on site and vaccinating nurse Miriam Fatima Arrua Nunez, the first person to receive the vaccine in the country.

The vaccination was also carried out in other hospitals in Asuncion, Encarnacion and Ciudad del Este.

"This week has not only seen the arrival of the vaccines, but we have also seen some interesting events that for me represent something really striking. For example, the arrival on Mars of another vehicle with a name that seems to me to refer to something that we all need in the country and in the world, this vehicle is called Perseverance. And now perseverance is what we need," said Mazzoleni.

According to reports, Paraguay currently got about 4,000 doses that will be used for health workers. It is expected to receive one million doses of Sputnik V and four million doses of other vaccines through the COVAX system.

To date, Paraguay has registered 149,684 cases of COVID-19 and 3,065 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
