UN: Sec-Gen Guterres 'strongly condemns' attack on UN convoy in DR Congo
Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres 'strongly condemns' the attack on a UN convoy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in New York City on Monday.
''The attack was perpetrated by unidentified armed combatants. The attack resulted in the killing of three people including the Italian ambassador to the DRC, his bodyguard and WFP (World Food Programme) national staff member,'' said Stephane Dujarric.
The attack occurred as the UN convoy was travelling from Congo’s eastern regional capital Goma to visit a WFP school project in Rutshuru.
Dujarric added that the secretary general "calls on the Democratic Republic of the Congo to investigate swiftly this heinous targeting of a UN joint field mission and to bring the perpetrators to justice.’’
