State of Palestine: Israeli forces demolish mosque and well near Hebron

Palestinian Territory, Occupied, Umm Qussa
January 27, 2021 at 15:43 GMT +00:00 · Published

Israeli forces demolished a mosque that was under construction and as well as a water well in the hamlet of Umm Qussa, in Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron on Wednesday morning.

Israeli officers were seen carrying an old man who was trying to stop their vehicles from destroying the mosque. The man repeatedly got up and went back to the middle of the road to try block the vehicles from passing.

The school's teacher and children were surprised this morning when they found the Israeli vehicles heading towards their area.

The grounds given for the demolition was that the mosque was being constructed without a permit.

"We are in this place, which the occupation forces raided this morning, carrying out the demolition operation of a mosque next to the Umm Qussa school. A water well was also demolished and the water pipes leading to these communities were broken," Sari Jabbour, Coordinator of the Popular Lanes in Southern West Bank, said.

The school is also under threat of being demolished, due to being built without a permit, leaving the children nowhere to go.

"We would have to build tents here until they complete their education. This is their right to education, according to all international norms and covenants," the school's director Yousef al-Basaytah said.

Masafer Yatta is a collection of around 19 hamlets inside 'Area C' of the West Bank, where Israeli forces have full military and civil control under the Oslo II Accord.
