Russia: Man accused of attacking FSB car in Navalny protests detained in Moscow
Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Wednesday that it had arrested an individual who allegedly vandalised an FSB vehicle in Moscow during last weekend’s unsanctioned protests calling for the release of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
According to the committee, an 18-year-old man is being held on charges of hooliganism and material damage.
Hundreds of people were detained by police at unauthorised rallies across the country on Saturday after Navalny and his supporters called for people to take to the streets.
Navalny was detained on January 17 upon his return to Russia from Germany, where he spent nearly five months recovering from an alleged Novichok nerve agent attack.
On Monday, January 18, the anti-corruption campaigner was jailed till February 15 for breaching parole conditions of a suspended sentence from a 2014 embezzlement conviction.
An appeal hearing to release Navalny from the Matrosskaya Tishina prison, where he is currently awaiting a full trial, is due on January 28.
