Netherlands: Riot police patrol streets following anti-curfew demo in Rotterdam

Netherlands, Rotterdam
January 25, 2021 at 21:52 GMT +00:00 · Published

Riot police officers were deployed on the streets of Rotterdam on Monday after an eventful night of unrest left fire and debris on the streets of the Dutch city.

Riots had previously broken out across the country causing clashes with the police on Sunday and Monday.

This was in response to a curfew, which came into effect on Saturday, preventing the public from going out in public between 21:00 and 04:30 except in cases of emergency. Under this curfew, only individuals with necessary documents are allowed in public and violators would pay a heavy fine.

The restrictions were introduced to contain the spread of the coronavirus, and thereby shield the country's healthcare system amid concerns over new strains of the virus.
