Dozens of protesters rallied to demand the release of opposition politician Alexei Navalny, outside the Russian embassy in Washington DC on Saturday.

The rally organised by Free Russia Foundation called on the Russian government to release Navalny, mirroring protests which took place across Russia and in some European cities. Protesters were seen holding signs demanding 'freedom' for Navalny, as well as other political prisoners attributed to President Vladimir Putin's administration.

Dimitri Valuev of the Free Russia Foundation explained the motives of the protest: "We gathered here to support a prominent Russian politician, Alexander Navalny, and to demand and investigation into his poisoning, we are here to demand his release."

Natalia Arno, President of the Free Russia Foundation also explicated a wider anti-corruption platform pursued by Navalny and his allies.

"Currently Navalny's movement is the strongest in Russia, in many many Russian regions many activists are working tirelessly to expose corruption in Putin's regime, it's unprecedented corruption, we cannot even imagine the scale of corruption," she said.

On Monday, Navalny was jailed for 30 days for breaching parole conditions of a suspended sentence from a 2014 embezzlement conviction. Navalny said the court ruling held inside the police station was a 'mockery.' His parole review hearing is currently scheduled to take place on January 29.

Similar protests took place in dozens of Russian cities, as well as in Berlin, Amsterdam and Tallinn on Saturday.
