Argentine footballer Eugenia Laprovittola says she is the daughter of late football icon Diego Maradona and launched a paternity suit to prove her filiation, as she explained in an interview from La Plata, on Friday.

Laprovittola said she learned that she could be the daughter of Diego Armando Maradona, after she was contacted by journalists.

"I thought it was a joke, and then other journalists began to pass me information, documents, dates, places, and then I decided to talk to my parents and there they show me the adoption papers and we were able to compare what journalists told me totally matched my adoption papers," she said.

The 25 year-old explained that her biological mother put her up for adoption after her partner found out that Eugenia was not his daughter.

"The story of my mother and Diego is that they met in a bar in the federal capital. A story began there, and she had another partner when she became pregnant with Diego, this partner found out that I would not be his daughter and began to punch (my mother's) belly every day in order to abort me, so my mother decided when I was born to give me the chance to live without this as she was afraid that this person would do something to me," she shared.

Laprovittola says she has started proceeding to prove her filiation with the football legend.

"For a filiation trial to begin, you have to present pieces of evidence, which is what my lawyer did, he collected everything and presented the evidence and the justice approved it and now we are in trial for filiation and succession," she explained.

Maradona reportedly recognised two sons and three daughters by four different women as his own, and acknowledged paternity for three children in Cuba, from two mothers.

The football icon passed away on November 25, 2020.
