A 107-year-old indigenous woman received a dose of a coronavirus vaccine in her village of Tenonde Pora, near Sao Paulo, on Wednesday, as part of a vaccination programme aimed at indigenous people in the region.

Maria Rita da Silva became the first in her village to receive a jab on the day the state government began a mass vaccination campaign for indigenous villagers, who have been hit hard by the coronavirus.

Brazil is one of the country's worst hit by the pandemic, with over 8.5 million confirmed coronavirus cases and more than 211,000 coronavirus-related deaths, according to data compiled by John Hopkins University, as of Thursday.
