Russia: Police detains Navalny’s supporters during unauthorised rally in St. Petersburg
Police detained supporters of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny during an unsanctioned rally in St. Petersburg on Monday.
Several protesters had gathered outside the Gostiny Dvor department store with some being detained shortly after the police warned them against the unsanctioned gathering. The local law enforcement agencies haven’t yet disclosed the exact number of detained Navalny’s supporters.
According to the decree of the city authorities, as well as Article 20.2 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, protests and pickets are prohibited due to the epidemiological situation in St. Petersburg.
On Monday, the court ordered Alexei Navalny to be held for 30 days for violating the terms of his suspended jail sentence. He is scheduled to appear at a parole review hearing on January 29.
Russia's Interior Ministry said that the court session was held at the police station as Navalny hadn't had a recent negative COVID-19 test.
The coronavirus pandemic was also cited as the reason why the hearing was closed to the press.
