Russia: Navalny moved from Khimki police station after being sentenced

Police moved Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny from Khimki Police station, as footage filmed on Monday evening showed.

Several supporters of the opposition activist had gathered outside the police station and some were detained shortly after the police had warned them against the unsanctioned gathering.

Earlier on Monday, a court held at the police station in Khimki ordered Navalny to be detained for 30 days for violating the terms of his suspended jail sentence.

According to media reports, Navalny will serve his sentence in the Matrosskaya Tishina remand prison.

Russia's Interior Ministry said that the court session was held at the police station as Navalny did not have a recent negative COVID-19 test.

On Sunday, Navalny returned to Russia after spending nearly five months in Germany where he was recovering from alleged poisoning with Novichok nerve agent in August. He was detained upon arrival at the Sheremetyevo airport and taken to the Khimki police station.

Navalny fell ill while aboard a domestic flight from Siberia to Moscow on August 20. He fell into a coma and was transported from a hospital in Omsk to Berlin's Charite hospital two days later.

At the end of December, Russia's Federal Penitentiary Service demanded that Navalny visit its office in accordance with the terms of a suspended sentence he received for a 2014 embezzlement case. The agency warned that he faced a real jail term if he failed to appear by December 29, a deadline which he eventually missed. On January 12, Federal Penitentiary Service formally requested for Navalny to be jailed for breaching the terms of a suspended prison sentence.
