Iraq: Protesters back on Nasiriya streets one week after deadly clashes
Protesters were back on the al-Haboubi Square in Nasiriya on Friday one week after violent clashes between anti-government protesters and supporters of cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.
"Thank God the protest is continuing with the same demands regardless of what happened last Friday when a militia attacked us and burned the protest camp tent. They also fired shots at us directly which results in ten being killed," said one protester Haitham al-Rekabi.
Several people were reportedly killed after violent clashes broke out between anti-government protesters and Sadrist Movement supporters in Nasiriya in Iraq's Dhi Qar governorate last week.
The Sadrist Movement is considered to be the largest bloc in the Iraqi parliament, after winning 54 out of 329 of its seats in the 2018 elections.
