France: Activists protest government policies seen as pro-Amazon
Activists from associations such as ANV-COP 21, Attac, Amis de la Terre, and Action Climat Paris demonstrated Amazon and government policies seen as favouring the e-commerce giant, outside the Economic and Finance Ministry in Paris, on Friday.
Activists turned the ministry into a mock Amazon warehouse, installing a banner reading 'change of ownership' with the Amazon logo, and stacks of boxes reading 'Stop to new Amazon warehouses' and 'Macron accomplice of Amazon.'
Protesters called the company out for its impact on local businesses as well as its environmental footprint.
"E-commerce is massively destroying jobs in Germany, France and Spain. In France, 81,000 jobs were destroyed between 2009 and 2018. In Germany too, in Spain 46,000. It is a machine for crushing small businesses," said Friends of the Earth campaign manager Alma Dufour.
ANV-COP 21 spokesperson Sandy Olivar Calvo added, "For two years, we've been saying this economic model offered by Amazon through overproduction is incompatible with the Paris agreements. We've been sounding the alarm bells for two years."
Activists demanded the inclusion of a moratorium against the construction of additional e-commerce warehouses in the 'Citizen's Climate Convention' bill.
Last week, thousands of protesters marched against a planned Amazon distribution centre near Nantes.
