India: Protesters demand justice for victims on 36th annv of Bhopal gas leak amid COVID spread

Protesters gathered in Bhopal on Wednesday marking the 36th anniversary of a pesticide plant gas leak, which is considered to be one of the world's worst industrial disaster.

The protesters demanded that the government should pay compensation for the victims and those affected by the tragedy.

Satinath Sarangi, an activist and founder of Sambhavan Trust stressed, "the mortality rate among the gas infected people was 6.5 times more due to COVID-19 than other people in the district."

Around 42,000 kilograms of deadly methyl isocyanate gas were released into the atmosphere at a gas leak on December 3, 1984. Amnesty International puts the figure of dead at 7,000 within the first three days.

Other activists say that the total number of those who died since 1984 is over 25,000 people. Families in Bhopal were paid compensatory sums back, but groundwater is reportedly still toxic. Tens of thousands reportedly suffer from cancer, respiratory diseases, neurological disorders, and blindness as a result of inhaling the toxic gas.
