UK: ‘Wild Wednesday’ - Londoners get festive as pubs reopen and vaccine approved
Londoners were in a jubilant mood on Wednesday as pubs reopened in some areas of the country and news broke that the UK had become the first country in the world to approve the use of the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus vaccine.
At the Churchill Arms in Kensington, dozens gathered to watch the traditional Christmas lights being turned on while in Hackney happy punters returned to the Kenton pub.
Wednesday saw an end to England's month-long nationwide lockdown amid hardship for the hospitality industry but news of the vaccine has been seen as a cause for optimism for the economy heading into the New Year.
There have been 1,659,256 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the UK since the outbreak began. Thus far there have been 59,699 virus-related deaths nationwide.
