Sudan: Ethiopians fleeing conflict take shelter at Sudanese border

Sudan, Hamdayet
December 2, 2020 at 21:47 GMT +00:00 · Published

Refugees fleeing the Tigray war in Ethiopia have been taking shelter in the Hamdayet region at the Sudanese border, sometimes in housing offered by locals, as seen on Monday.

"Since we came, the Sudanese have honoured us with food and drinks. We bear all the expenses of the refugees here, and as you can see we have never slept on the land. [They give us] clean beds and mattresses," said Garmaryam Karnakil, a refugee.

The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) has accused Ethiopia's government, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, of carrying out attacks on civilians, including bombings, shooting, and looting. Ahmed alleges the operations are targeting militant fighters.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), nearly 46,000 Ethiopian nationals fled to neighbouring Sudan since the start of November, 2,500 of which were registered on Friday alone.

The increasing numbers of refugees are already overwhelming the capacities of the country and are raising concerns about sanitation and hygiene according to UNHCR. Last week, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, made an appeal for the international support for Sudan, hoping to raise $147 million (€121 million).

Concern has also been raised by Grandi towards Ethiopia's hosting of close to 100,000 refugees from Eritrea, who are largely based in the conflict-embroiled Tigray region.
