Iraq: Crowds rally to decry poor economic and living conditions

Iraq, Sulaymaniyah

Crowds protested the Kurdish Regional Government in the city of Sulaymaniyah on Wednesday, decrying deteriorating economic and living conditions as the country grapples with a financial crisis.

The demonstrators gathered at the Saray Azadi square (Freedom Square), where speeches were held.

Teachers protested a delay in the payment of their salaries, amid a delay in the start of the school year.

"We ask the [Kurdish Regional] Government to respond seriously to providing us with livelihoods, salaries and financial expenses. The government should not act in this way and corruption should be eliminated. Therefore, the demonstration will continue every day in Saray Azadi to achieve our rights," said a teacher, Sadq Haladani.

"We have no rights and our salaries are stolen, they silence people with baseless lies and speeches, and they do not pay our salaries. It is indeed a shame that only the class of employees and teachers will come to the streets. Everyone must come to the streets to demand their rights," stated another teacher, Bekhall Gulladin.

Protesters also called for an administrative reform and the eradication of corruption.
