Germany: 'A black day without end' - Trier mayor as 4 killed after car drives into pedestrians
Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe said the German city was experiencing a "black day without end" following the death of at least four people, and several more injuries, after a car drove through a pedestrian zone on Tuesday.
"We always see these images on TV, from other countries, and we always think that in Trier this cannot happen," Leibe said. "And now this happened in Trier and I stand here as mayor and am speechless."
A police speaker said the arrested driver of the vehicle is a "51 year old man, a German from the Trier-Saarburg district," who was "sitting alone in the car" at the moment of his arrest.
The suspect was under arrest and being questioned, the police speaker added.
"Right now the city centre is closed down. More than 100 police officers are there to secure the area," Leibe said. "There are people who are in a state of shock. They are being taken care of here. The injured and the seriously injured are already in the hospitals."
Police and firefighters were seen inspecting the cordoned off perimeter, as several emergency vehicles were present on site.
