Dozens of older residents of the village of Yugouliang showed off their impressive yoga skills and flexibility despite the freezing temperatures, on Friday.

The previously poverty-stricken village, in China's north-eastern Hebei province, has become well known for its love of yoga. Residents practice up to twice a day to help improve their fitness and avoid health problems.

According to Jin Xiuying, the director of the Yugouliang yoga club, the villagers started to practice yoga in 2016 when the village secretary Lu Wenzhen entered into office. He was inspired after he saw grandmas sitting cross-legged on a kang, a heated sleeping platform during the winter months and now teaches yoga.

Now, over 60 residents in the village have joined the yoga class during the colder months.

The group also uploads videos of villagers' yoga practice on social media, promoting the village's agricultural products and attracting yoga enthusiasts to the area.
