Spain: Madrid centre crowded as Christmas season kicks off amid COVID spread
The Preciado Street in Madrid city centre was seen full of people on the first weekend with Christmas lights on, Sunday, despite recommendations to avoid crowds and maintain social distance due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The crowded street and people walking past shops were seen in the centre of the Spanish capital with some spotted queuing up to enter the shops.
"I think there are too many people, some of them might get infected, I guess because some people here aren't respecting some things," said a local who was walking in the area.
"There's a lot of people, it's a bit overwhelming, but we're protecting ourselves with the face masks and we're having a good time," said Josias, another local.
The Community of Madrid has begun to ease the restrictions on mobility in the region, which has been hit the hardest by the coronavirus in Spain. The curfew will be maintained between 00:00 and 06:00.
As of Sunday, Spain has reported 1,628,208 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 44,668 deaths related to the disease, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
