Switzerland: We have not lived up to Syrian people's expectations - UN envoy ahead of latest peace talks

United Nations special envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen acknowledged the difficulties of the peace talks and called for 'steady progress' at a news conference in Geneva on Sunday, ahead of the fourth round of the Syrian Constitution Committee talks.

"We know that we have not lived up to the expectations of the Syrian people in making the progress that is necessary to end the suffering for the Syrian people. So it's my hope that with the relative calm that we are seeing in Syria now despite all the daily violations, it should be possible to focus more heavily on the political process and all the elements of Security Council resolution 2254," Pedersen said.

Resolution 2254 calls for a ceasefire and political settlement to the conflict in Syria.

"After nearly now 10 years of conflict there is a deep lack of trust between the parties," Pedersen told the press, but said he hopes that what the committee has achieved is "the beginning of starting to build trust between the parties and that this building of trust could then be a door-opener to a broader political process."

The week-long meeting due to start on Monday should discuss 'national foundations and principles,' while constitutional issues, including elections, are set to be on the agenda at a fifth round of talks in January.

The Syrian Constitutional Committee tasked with drafting the constitution met for the first time in Geneva on October 30, 2019. It is made up of 150 Syrian delegates representing the government, the opposition, and civil society. A 'small body' with 45 members is participating at the latest meeting in Geneva.
