Iran: Protesters decry 'cowardly assassination' of nuclear scientist and demand reprisal
Protesters gathered in Tehran on Saturday to demand the government retaliate to the killing of top Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was killed near Tehran the day before.
"The Zionist regime should know that it has shortened its life with this cowardly assassination," said one of the protesters.
Earlier in the day, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani vowed to retaliate to the killing of the scientist, and said many more scientists would fill his place.
Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, reportedly the architect of Tehran's nuclear strategy, was killed on Friday on a motorway near Tehran. According to local reports, the scientist's car was bombed and hit with small arms fire.
Iran blames Israel for playing a role in the attack, while the Israeli military, as well as the Israeli prime minister's office, have declined to comment on reports of the incident.
It is not yet clear if the assailants escaped the scene of the attack or were apprehended.
