Turkey: Istanbul craftsman designs luxurious gold and silver masks amid pandemic
A Turkish silversmith put his gold and silver face masks on display in Istanbul on Saturday.
The masks weigh 25 grams and are lined with silk to be more comfortable. The metals don't restrict breathing when worn, according to shop owner Sabri Demirci.
"[The] silver [mask] is 999-carat pure silver, and [the] gold [mask] is made of 18-carat gold. The feature of silver is that it is antibacterial due to its nature. It has no germs, viruses, bacteria on it. We produced silver gold masks because of that," said Demirci, the mask designer who has been working with silver for 32 years at a shop in Fatih's Eminonu district.
The shop owner said it took him four and a half months to develop the fancy masks. "It was exhausting because it's the first time we've done something that's never been done before in the world," Sabri Demirci said.
The silver masks cost 1,500 Turkish liras (€191/$188), while the masks made of gold have a tag price of 20,000 Turkish liras (€2133/$2552).
