France: Shops reopen as second nationwide lockdown gradually eases

France, Paris
November 28, 2020 at 17:48 GMT +00:00 · Published

Dozens of Parisians were seen entering malls and walking down shopping streets, as the first of three phases of gradual easing of the nationwide lockdown began on Saturday.

"It's an excellent measure because it seems completely ridiculous to me to close some shops and open others," said Claudette, a local resident.

"I have seen that people have learned their lesson. There's a distance of a metre, we're not right next to each other, there's everything there has to be: products, masks, people don't push or get into scuffles," said Sonja, local resident. "I hope it lasts and I hope people are paying attention so we can spend the holidays really well with the family," she added.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday evening a three-stage softening of the current COVID measures, the first of which called for the reopening of all "non-essential" shops that had to close on October 30. Worship services with up to 30 participants are also allowed to resume starting Saturday.

The second stage will start December 15 and will allow people to travel and be with their families for Christmas, while museums, cinemas and theatres will reopen. Lockdown will be lifted and replaced with a daily curfew between 21:00 and 7:00, except on the Christmas and New Year's eve.

In the third stage will start on January 20, allowing restaurants, bars and gyms to reopen, provided the numbers of new COVID infections don't surge during the Christmas holidays.
