Egypt: Thousands gather to celebrate Al Ahly's CAF Champions League win
Large crowds of Al-Ahly fans gathered on Friday across Cairo to watch the decisive game of the African Champions League, and to celebrate Al-Ahly's victory over Zamalek afterwards, despite warnings about the spread of coronavirus.
Al-Ahly won the final game in the 86th minute, scoring 2 to 1 against Zamalek, and taking home the 2020 CAF Champions League trophy.
After the match, thousands of fans flooded the streets of Cairo cheering, chanting, lighting fireworks and waving the team's flags, as some of them were seen driving in caravans, honking and cheering from their vehicles.
Few were seen wearing or following social distancing recommendations, despite Prime Minister of Egypt Mostafa Madbouly urging citizens to follow the health and safety measures and take all necessary precautions to avoid a second wave of the virus.
Egypt has reported over 114,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus, and 6,608 deaths according to Johns Hopkins University.
