USA: Fans pay tribute to Maradona at makeshift memorial in front of NYC mural

Fans laid out flowers and candles in front of a mural depicting late football legend Diego Maradona in Brooklyn, New York City, on Thursday.

Flowers, candles and memorabilia including a replica of the World Cup could be seen making up the makeshift memorial, as fans expressed their admiration for the Argentine legend.

Maradona fan Gervasio Piazoli called him "the greatest in history, who gave Argentines so much happiness," before adding "thanks, Diego."

"With his glories and his feats in Mexico '86 and in the vilified south of Italy playing for Naples, he practically became the best of all time," said Maradona fan Ignacio Salas. "He went to play from Barcelona, a big team, to a small one that was about to gopass to second league [Naples]. And he made it a champion two times, not only of Italy but of Europe as well. Who else does that?"

The football icon passed away on Wednesday from a heart attack, as he was recovering from a brain operation that took place on November 3.
