France: Hundreds rally in Paris against 'shocking' evacuation of migrant camp
Hundreds swamped the landmark Place de la Republique in central Paris in support of migrants on Tuesday, one day after the violent evacuation of a migrant camp.
"We forget that they (migrants) are humans and we see that on images they (police) treat people as if they were objects, they throw them away like they throw their tents. It's just not acceptable to see that, it's shocking and the little we manage to do at the moment is to end up here, that's what we're here for," said a protester at the square.
Some demonstrators climbed atop the monument and let off flares, while chanting slogans.
Clashes broke out on Monday when the police were clearing out a new migrant camp at the Place de la Republique, prompting French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin to call images of the scuffles 'shocking' on Twitter and asking for a report on the incident.
Some undocumented migrants installed tents on the square after the evacuation of the Saint-Denis camp by the French authorities last week.
On November 17, a police operation dislodged 2,500 refugees from the camp located in the north of Paris. Around 800 of them remain without a lodging solution, according to the pro-migrant activist group Utopia 56.
