Russia: Lavrov hails ‘positive’ situation in Libya amid ceasefire

Russian Federation, Moscow
November 24, 2020 at 22:50 GMT +00:00 · Published

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives Aguila Saleh Issa in Moscow on Tuesday.

Lavrov said that the situation in Libya is ‘positive’ since their last meeting with Aguila Saleh Issa.

“A lot of positive things have happened in and around Libya,” said Lavrov, before adding that “the ceasefire has been observed for many months now, hardly being violated by anybody.”

"Your meeting with Sarraj in August this year played a very important role in launching or restarting the political process, which is, however, with some problems, but still continues and is gaining speed. And we are very impressed by your focus on ensuring that the settlement covers all key political forces, all regions of your homeland," he continued.

The foreign minister also noted Russia's interest in resuming ties with Libya, including in the energy sector, transport infrastructure, as well as in economic investment projects in general.

Saleh, on his turn, highlighted the role of Russia in the settlement of the Libyan crisis and expressed his commitment to the development of relations between the states.

Talking about the situation in Libya, he expressed his hope for the presidential elections to be held at the end of 2021 and noted the importance of achieving consensus between the warring parties.

"Now the situation in Libya has begun to improve, there are flights between the West and the East, oil is being exported, and the traffic is fine - it has already become better between the West and the East. So therefore, we have no choice but to form government bodies in the nearest future to unite state structures and ensure the protection of the rights of our compatriots. This is our only choice," Saleh explained.
