Anti-submarine destroyer Admiral Vinogradov prevented border violation by the USS Navy Destroyer John S. McCain in the Peter the Great Gulf, Russian Defence Ministry said on Tuesday.

"Today at 03:17 (GMT) US Navy destroyer John S. McCain, which had been present in the Sea of Japan for several days already, violated territorial waters of the Russian Federation in the Peter the Great Gulf after it went two kilometres beyond the borderline," read the statement.

Destroyer Admiral Vinogradov, which was tracking the US ship, warned the crew of the USS John S. McCain through "an international communications channel of inadmissibility of such actions and the potential of resorting to ramming to force the violator out of territorial waters."

After the warning was issued, USS John S. McCain changed its course, entered neutral waters and didn’t make any attempts to return to the Russian territory.

The US Navy denied any violation of international law.

"USS John S. McCain asserted navigational rights and freedoms in the vicinity of Peter the Great Bay in the Sea of Japan. This freedom of navigation operation upheld the rights, freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea recognised in international law by challenging Russia's excessive maritime claims," stated the US Seventh Fleet Public Affairs.
