Spain: Migrants continue to arrive at port of Arguineguin in Gran Canaria
The arrival of groups of migrants at the port of Arguineguin, Gran Canaria, continues. Forty migrants were rescued from the small boat in which they were travelling from Africa on Sunday. Some of them had to be carried out by the emergency services, although no victims have been confirmed.
At around 13:30 local time (13:30 GMT), the Guardia Civil reportedly notified the Las Palmas Rescue Centre that a suspicious boat had been detected on the radar. The Salvamar Menkalinan ship was activated and they went to rescue the boat.
The maritime rescue team intercepted the boat and transferred the 40 occupants to the Arguineguin dock.
The migrants can be seen being treated by doctors and Red Cross workers in the port of Arguineguin. Muhammad, a family friend of one of the migrants held in the area, who came to pick him up at the Arguineguin port, can also be seen. Muhammad explained that his father took the same risk that his friend recently took in search of a better life.
Currently, there are about 592 people in the Arguineguin port area.
The Canary Islands are currently experiencing a migration crisis. More than 17,000 people have arrived from Africa to the Islands during this year, more than 10 times the number seen in 2019.
