Russia: ‘It is not a big deal’ - Putin on lack of post-election congratulations to Biden from Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Moscow not congratulating the US presidential candidate Joe Biden does not have any subtext, as he stated that in an interview with the host of the program "Moscow. Kremlin. Putin" on the ‘Russia-1’ TV channel on Sunday.

"It is not a big deal. I want to assure you that it does not have any background. It is not that we like someone or not. We are just waiting for the end of the internal political confrontation," Putin said.

The Russian leader also noted that the US electoral system "has some problems," but added, however, that only the Americans should evaluate the legitimacy of their government.

"Whether something needs to be changed or not is not our business. It only concerns the American people and their representatives in parliament, as well as their president. If they are okay with that, for God's sake. But of course, it does not give anyone the right to point at flaws in other political systems, including in the electoral one," he explained.

Commenting on the tripartite agreement in Nagorno-Karabakh, the president stressed that the document was drawn up by the leaders of all three sides - Russian, Armenian, and Azerbaijani.

"It was impossible to do that in any other way because in fact it was an agreement between the two sides. Russia played only the role of a mediator and assumed the obligations under the document to carry out the peaceful separation of forces. That is what we are doing now. Therefore, of course, the authors of the document itself were all three sides," Putin concluded.

Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a Russian-brokered deal to end fighting over the Nagorno-Karabakh region on November 9.

Under the terms of the deal, 1,960 Russian peacekeepers have been deployed in the disputed region to monitor the situation.

The agreement also sees Azerbaijan maintaining control of the territory taken in the most recent fighting, and Armenia relinquishing control of further areas held since the Nagorno-Karabakh war in 1994.
