Turkey: 'We panicked' - Izmir earthquake survivors react as rescue efforts continue

Survivors of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in the Turkish city of Izmir reacted to the ordeal as rescue efforts continued outside buildings damaged by the disaster, on Friday.

A local, Cagatay Yonbas, said that he called his father when the earthquake happened. Upon learning the news that a building opposite of theirs collapsed, he said he "panicked."

"The traffic jams have been really bad. Normally, it takes 15 minutes to get here from Karsiyaka but today it took two hours. As we arrived, rescue teams were already at work," he recalled.

Yonbas added that they helped rescue efforts, saying "There was not any security sealing at that time separating us. An injured woman was rescued. At that moment we held stretchers to help out. But after that we couldn't get into rubble to help."

The owner of a pet shop located next to the damaged building, Ezgi Bilir, said that their fish bowls exploded when the earthquake hit.

"Then, imminently, we were shaken. We immediately took ourselves out. It was dust everywhere in the air and (things were) unclear as the BIM [supermarket] collapsed. We called our friends to find out what happened on the other side of the city. Some were alive and some were left under rubble," she shared.

According to reports, at least 25 were killed after the powerful earthquake hit the Aegean region on Friday.
