Tunisia: 'My son does not do such things' - relatives of Nice attack suspect react to church killings

Relatives of the Nice attack suspect, 21-year-old Tunisian national Brahim Aouissaoui, reacted to news of the killings which took place on Thursday morning in a church in the southern French city, with several expressing shock and surprise.

"I lost my son and I lost my life and I demand an investigation about who stands behind the incident and I want to know who recruited my son. My son does not do such things, he can't even harm a chicken, I want the truth," said Qamar Aouissaoui, Brahim's mother.

Others echoed her desire for an investigation, with his sister saying, "Aren't there surveillance cameras everywhere in France? Show us what these cameras recorded, reveal the truth to us. And in case he was involved in the incident, you can hold him accountable, however, if he wasn't involved in the incident then we want his rights back."

"He had no [suspicious] connections or any problems. He may have been in the wrong place when the incident occurred," said his brother Nassim. "He was a friend of everyone in his life."

Three people were killed in the deadly knife attack, which ended with Brahim being shot and taken into custody.

World leaders have expressed condemnation of the killings in Nice, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel saying she was 'deeply shaken' by the 'terrible murders' while Trump has said "our hearts are with the people of France."

The Turkish Foreign Ministry meanwhile strongly condemned the attack in a statement. "Those who conducted this savage attack at a sacred place of worship do not clearly share any religious, humane or moral values,'' its statement reads.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also spoke out against the violence. "This escalating vicious cycle-hate speech, provocations & violence-must be replaced by reason & sanity," he tweeted.

Tensions have been escalating in France following the beheading of a school teacher in Paris on October 16, after he showed cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad to his students during a discussion on freedom of speech.
