USA: National Guard deployed in Philadelphia ahead of citywide curfew after police shooting unrest

United States, Philadelphia

The US National Guard arrived in Philadelphia on Friday, after they were deployed at the request of Pennsylvania's governor following nights of protest and looting in the wake of the fatal police shooting of an African-American man on Monday.

The killing of Walter Wallace Jr. prompted protests, which at points became violent, with looting also taking place in the city.

A citywide curfew, which will last from 21:00 to 06:00 local time (01:00 to 10:00 GMT), was confirmed by the authorities on Friday afternoon; despite the fact large-scale protests were not reported in the past two days.

Twenty-seven-year-old Wallace Jr. was shot as officers responded to a report of a person with a weapon in the Cobbs Creek neighbourhood. Wallace was allegedly armed with a knife. According to the officers, he was shot several times when he advanced towards them. The man's father said that his son was on medication as he struggled with mental health issues.

Bodycam footage of the incident has not yet been publicly released by the Philadelphia Police Department, although the family of the victim has reviewed the footage on Thursday as part of legal proceedings.

The timing of the deployment means the National Guard is likely to be present in Philadelphia during the upcoming US presidential elections.
