France: Nice residents and local officials pay tribute to victims at scene of church knife attack

Residents of Nice and officials paid tribute on Friday to the victims of the horrific knife attack.

Several residents could be seen crying, as several left flowers.

Elected member of the Alpes-Maritimes, Eric Ciotti, said France was "at war" with Islam.

"It is also necessary to stop all forms of immigration in this crisis situation, especially these asylum seekers who are allowed to enter France through this procedure. We have seen the path of the terrorist who entered Europe thanks to the lightness of Europe," he added, as other residents shared their shock at the attack.

Boubelkeur Bekri, Vice-president of regional representative council of the Muslim faith, said he rejected what had happened on Thursday.

A "crime has been committed inside this cathedral and we came here, with all the representatives of the cults, to show our solidarity," he said.

On Thursday, a man stabbed three people inside the church. Two of the victims died from fatal stab wounds to the neck, while a third managed to escape to a local bar, but later died of her injuries.

The suspect, identified as a 21-year-old Tunisian asylum seeker, was tasered and shot five times by police, before being taken to hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. A further person has been arrested in connection with the attack.
