Jordan: Shops remove French products from shelves as boycott gains steam

Jordan, Amman
October 27, 2020 at 20:46 GMT +00:00 · Published

Several shops in Jordan responded the call to boycott products from France, as seen in a supermarket in Amman on Tuesday, as French President Emmanuel Macron defended the right to show cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad and described Islam as a religious "in crisis."

Products in Yaser Mall supermarket could be seen covered with a banner reading: "In support of Prophet Muhammad, all French products were boycotted."

French goods have been stripped off from some shops also in Kuwait and Qatar, bolstered by online campaigns calling for the boycott.

"France and the French president don't appreciate (the impact of publishing the caricatures) on the feelings of all Muslims. Therefore, we, Muslims, must boycott, which is the least we can do," a customer said.

"The (French) goods at our shop, which we have boycotted and stopped selling, will be returned to their manufacturers and suppliers, who will send it back to France as we have no interest whatsoever in them," Zahir Al-Derbashi, Manager of Yaser Mall, said.

Jordan, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iran condemned Emmanuel Macron for backing the publishing of the cartoons, while protests against France have been taking place worldwide in the past days.

Macron's remarks came after the murder in Paris of Samuel Paty, a school teacher who had previously shown caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad to his students during a discussion on freedom of speech in class.
