Iran: Fresh sanctions imposed by US are 'new oppression,' says Tehran

The new sanctions imposed by the US on the Iranian oil industry are a 'new oppression,' an Iranian government spokesperson said at a press conference in Tehran on Tuesday.

"We think that the new actions that the US is taking actually complement the actions that it has taken so far," spokesperson Ali Rabiei said, pondering that the sanctions "will not have much of an impact."

On Monday the US Treasury Department announced sanctions targeting the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum, the National Iranian Oil Company and the National Iranian Tanker Company for "their financial support to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps - Quds Force."

Ali Rabiei told the press: "We think that now is the time for the US government to put aside its stubbornness and make up for its past mistakes. However, this maximum pressure on Iran has not worked, except that the US has committed crimes, broken the law, and on an unprecedented scale in modern times has discredited the US around the world, and I think they have received a clear message, continuing this path will not have a better result in any way."

The spokesperson went on to say that "the US must be ready to respond to the damages it has inflicted on the Iranian people during the withdrawal period" from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement, a 2015 multilateral nuclear deal with Iran.

Ali Rabiei also made some comments about the US presidential election, dismissing any accusations of Tehran being willing to intervene in the process, saying that "it does not matter" to Iran who becomes the next US president.
