Pakistan: Protesters calling for French boycott burn effigy of Macron after comments on Islam

Dozens of protesters in Karachi set fire to an effigy of French President Emmanuel Macron while calling for a boycott of all French products on Tuesday. The protest was one of many worldwide after Macron's comments regarding caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

"Not only in Pakistan, but throughout the whole of the Muslim world, Muslims are staging protests against the French government regarding the publication of blasphemous sketches. We condemn this act and demand that the government of Pakistan sack the French Ambassador and terminate all relations with France," stated protester Asif Raza Qadri.

The protesters held a large banner together which read: 'Protest against hateful act of Islamaphobia and blasphemy of our beloved Prophet PBUH [Peace be upon him] in France.' It also read: "Boycott France, long live Islam, down with France, Islamaphobia is not acceptable, stop blasphemous cartoons.'

On Monday the Pakistani parliament unanimously passed a resolution condemning the blasphemous caricatures in France.

The demonstrations and calls for a boycott come after Macron backed the publication of caricatures of Prophet Muhammad by satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

Earlier this month, the French president said that Islam is “a religion that is in crisis all over the world today,” as he announced a bill to “strengthen” a 1905 law that officially separated church and state in the country.

In a statement on Sunday, France’s foreign affairs ministry urged countries to stop the boycott of French products.
