Lebanon: Hariri pledges to stop country's collapse and implement French initiative

Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri pledged to stop the country's economic, social and security collapse and to implement the terms of the French initiative, in a brief speech he delivered to journalists, on Thursday, at the Baabda Palace after President Michel Aoun tasked him with forming a government.

Hariri specified the task of the government that he seeks to form from "specialist non-partisan ministers" to "implement the economic, financial and administrative reforms contained in the French initiative paper."

He also pledged to the Lebanese people "who are suffering from difficulties to the point of despair" to "stop the collapse that threatens our economy, our society and our security, and to rebuild what was destroyed by the terrible explosion of the port in Beirut."

During parliamentary consultations, according to the presidency, Hariri obtained 65 votes, while 53 MPs declined to vote, and eight MPs who had resigned did not participate in the consultations.

Hariri resigned from the premiership on October 29, 2019, about two weeks after the outbreak of unprecedented popular demonstrations on October 17 in protest against the deteriorating economic situation and the ruling political class.
