Fans celebrate ahead of 30th anniv of 'Super Robot Wars' series at mecha cosplay event in Osaka

Robot cosplay enthusiasts held a special exhibition in Osaka on Sunday ahead of the 30th-anniversary celebration of their beloved 'Super Robot Wars' video game series.

Mechanically operated human-sized robot costumes and models from the popular series, which is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary next year, could be seen, as well as designs taken from other popular mecha series.

"The reason why I wanted to do this kind of thing is that modelling is the most important thing for me to express the emotions that have been nurtured by touching such works since I was a child," explained an exhibitor whose recreation of a soldier robot named Lamba, from the manga series Lupin the Third, could be seen hanging from the exhibition hall ceiling.

"Cosplaying robots are hard to make, expensive and time-consuming. What's more, it is hard to show off at a cosplay event, just to bring it, and it's really hard to wear it," said another exhibitor at the exhibition pointing out the time and dedication it takes for the projects to come together.

The 'Super Robot Wars' series, which is now published by Japanese video gaming giant Bandai Namco Entertainment, first appeared on the Nintendo Gameboy in 1991, and featured robots from multiple franchises including the Gundam series.

The franchise, which was first published in the US in 2006, has since expanded to include an anime series as well as manga adaptations,.
