Nagorno-Karabakh: Stepanakert residents discuss new 'humanitarian truce'

Disputed Territory, Stepanakert

Accusations about ceasefire violations continue between Armenia and Azerbaijan, despite a new 'humanitarian truce' regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict coming into force at midnight on Saturday, October 17th. On Sunday Ruptly talked to residents of Stepanakert, the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region’s capital city, about the new agreement.

Many expressed doubt about the effectiveness of the truce, as the city had reportedly faced shelling again. "If the presidents gather and decide, together with the CSTO, to create a buffer zone, then a truce could be reached. And now we can't talk about any truce. Still from there, do you hear? Explosions." one Stepanakert resident said.

Some locals stated their beliefs that other countries are intervening in the conflict. "You know, Turks and Azerbaijanis can never be trusted. Even in the most peaceful times - again, you should not trust them. You have to always keep your ears open and your eyes sharp," one resident said.

Fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh broke out on September 27. Yerevan and Baku agreed to a ceasefire on October 10, but both sides have since accused each other of continuing attacks.
