France: Teacher attack suspect 'fired 5 times with a handgun' at the police - prosecutor

The suspect of Friday's beheading of a teacher in a suburb of Paris fired five times at police officers before being shot dead, a French anti-terrorism public prosecutor said on Saturday.

"The individual was running in their direction, fired five times with a handgun. Three of the police officers fought back, causing the assailant to fall. As he tried to get up and stab the police officers, he was neutralised by the police," prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard explained at a press conference in Paris.

The attacker was chased and killed in nearby Eragny-Sur-Oise. “His body shows nine bullet entry impacts. One dagger-type knife, one airsoft-type handgun and five gas cartridges compatible with this weapon were seized," Ricard said.

The suspect was identified as being Abdulak Abuezidovich A., a 18-year-old Russian of “Chechen origin” who lived in Evreux, Normandy, with a refugee status. “On a judicial level, he has never been convicted, while being known for cases of degradation of public property and gang violence while still a minor,” the prosecutor added.

Jean-Francois Ricard said that immediately after the attack, the suspect posted a “macabre photo” of the victim with a message admitting the religiously motivated crime. “The investigations were able to confirm that it was indeed an account belonging to the author of these deeds,” the prosecutor told the press.

On Friday, 47-year-old history teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded outside his school in Conflans Sainte-Honorine, northwest of Paris. The teacher had recently showed caricatures of Islam's Prophet Muhammad to his students during a discussion on freedom of speech.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the incident as an "Islamist terror attack" and urged the nation to unite.

[CORRECTION: The original script erroneously stated that the teacher was beheaded by ‘one of his students.’ This has been corrected.]
