The trial of four suspects accused of involvement in the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants in a lorry in Essex last year, got underway in London on Wednesday.

Reporters and camera people could be seen gathered outside London's Central Criminal court, where the trial, which is set to last up to six weeks, began on Tuesday.

Two suspects, Gheorghe N., and Eamonn H., were charged with 39 counts of manslaughter as well as conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration.

Two other suspects, Valentin C., and Christopher K., were also charged with conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration.

Two other men have already plead guilty over in relation to the case earlier this year: Irish haulier, Ronan Hughes, who admitted to manslaughter and conspiracy in August, and Maurice Robinson, a Northern Irish lorry driver, who plead guilty to the same charges in April.

A total of 31 men and eight women, all of whom were Vietnamese nationals and believed to have been undocumented migrant workers, were found dead inside the refrigerated lorry in Essex, in October 2019. Eamonn H. allegedly drove the vehicle to a port in Belgium, before it was transported onwards to the UK.
