Greece: Chaos erupts outside Athens court as verdict announced in Golden Dawn trial
Chaos erupted outside the Supreme Civil and Criminal Court, in Athens, on Wednesday, as police used water cannons on crowds gathered to protest against the self-described nationalist party Golden Dawn as 68 of its members are on trial on charges including murder and attempted murder.
Footage shows police using water cannons on the crowd and protesters throwing Molotov cocktails.
Hundreds of anti-fascist activists, members of student organisations, workers' unions and other groups gathered outside the court as the verdicts in the five year trial were announced.
The defendants, including for the far-right party's leader Nikos Michaloliakos and several other former MPs, were due to be either sentenced or acquitted following a five-year-long mega-trial.
Golden Dawn members were found guilty of orchestrating the murder of anti-fascist activist and rapper Pavlos Fyssas, as well as several other attempted murders, and organising multiple attacks.
