Germany: Belarusian opposition leader Tikhanovskaya meets with Merkel in Berlin

Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya arrived at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin on Tuesday for a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

According to Tikhanovskaya's official social media accounts, during the talks she mentioned the necessity of providing financial support to the Belarusian opposition, including independent media and human rights organisations.

Reportedly, she gave a white-red-white brooch as a present to Merkel, in reference to the white-red-white former Belarusian flag which has been taken up as a symbol by the opposition in the country.

Tikhanovskaya arrived in Berlin on Monday and is also set to meet with Foreign Minister Heiko Maas during her visit.

Protests have been going on in Belarus since August, when President Alexander Lukashenko won a disputed sixth presidential term.

According to the official results, which are contested by the opposition, Tikhanovskaya won 10 percent of the vote, whereas Lukashenko received more than 80 percent.

On Friday, the EU announced sanctions against 40 individuals "responsible for repression and intimidation" in connection with the government response to the demonstrations, as well as for "misconduct of the electoral process." Notably the list of affected individuals did not include Lukashenko, whose reelection the EU has not recognised.
