President of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region Arayik Harutyunyan said on Sunday that Azerbaijan forces shelled the city of Stepanakert using Smerch and Polonez multiple rocket launchers. The comments were made during a briefing in Stepanakert.

"The enemy has been shelling not only villages and cities, but also Stepanakert. [They used] Smerch and Polonez, the most modern multiple rocket launchers and artillery. In the sky above Stepanakert there are different UAVs, which spin there every second, they don’t cease artillery fire on Stepanakert," said Harutyunyan.

Following the statement the head of disputed region added that the army of Nagorno-Karabakh Republic delivered a warning artillery strike at military targets in the Azerbaijani city of Ganja.

"We struck because they forced us to do so. Come to your senses! Come to your senses because we will keep on shelling the military facilities in other, bigger cities, if necessary. This shelling was a warning," cleared Harutyunyan.

He also said that he had ordered to cease artillery and rocket shelling of enemy’s territory in order to provide the Azerbaijani side with time. The NKR leader also urged the Azerbaijani army to "stay away" from the civilian population.

Addressing his compatriots, Harutyunyan urged to fight not against the Azerbaijani people, which are a hostage of the "dictatorial government of Azerbaijan and Turkey," but against the government of Azerbaijan.

The Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan reported on Sunday the the Armenian side shelled the city of Ganja which caused casualties as well as destruction of civilian infrastructure. The Defence Minister of the republic Zakir Gasanov stressed that "launching fire from the territory of Armenia on the territory of Azerbaijan is clearly provocative and expands the zone of hostilities."

Armenian Defence Minister David Tonoyan said that Azerbaijan itself expanded the war zone by shelling the settlements in Vardenis area with artillery and UAVs. Tonoyan also added that Armenia hadn't shelled the territory of Azerbaijan with artillery.

The representative of Armenian Defence Ministry Artsrun Ovannisyan also said on Sunday that the military facilities in big Azerbaijani cities will from now on be the targets of NKR army.

Fighting in the disputed region broke out on Sunday when Azerbaijani and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported. Both sides blame each other for the escalation and report of thousands of casualties.
