Armenia: Around ‘150 members of Turkish special forces’ in command posts of Azerbaijani army - PM Pashinyan

Around “150 members of Turkish special forces” are in command posts of different units in the Azerbaijani army alongside Syrian fighters, claimed Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in an address to the nation from Yerevan on Saturday.

“Our military has evidence, that besides the units of the Azerbaijani army, Syrian terrorists and members of special units of Turkish troops were also involved in the attacks. According to our information, about 150 members of Turkish special forces are in different commanding positions in the Azerbaijani army, as they are commanding and leading combat operations,” He said.

Pashinyan went on to say that the scale of the attacks against the Armenian army “are unprecedented,” adding that “at the moment we already have a lot of casualties among military and civilians.”

Meanwhile, Pashinyan pointed out that despite the ongoing attacks, the Azerbaijani army could not “solve any strategic problem”.

The prime minister also stressed that Azerbaijani army’s aim was not to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, but to destroy the Armenian nation.

“Our enemies do not aim to solve strategic issues. They did not come for a solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. They did not come to capture cities, territories, and villages. They aim to continue their policy in annihilating the Armenians and committing the Armenian genocide, they want to continue it,” he added.

Talking about Azerbaijani casualties, Pashinyan said “hundreds of armored vehicles, dozens of helicopters and planes, and hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles have been destroyed so far. The number of eliminated enemy soldiers exceeds several thousand.”

Fighting in the disputed region broke out on Sunday when Azerbaijani and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported. Both sides blame each other for the escalation and report of thousands of casualties.

The Armenian Foreign Ministry announced in the early hours of Friday that Yerevan is ready to work with international mediators to reach a ceasefire with Azerbaijan.

Yerevan has accused Turkey of directly supporting Azerbaijan in the fighting, a claim denied by Baku.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron, and US President Donald Trump issued a joint statement calling for an immediate ceasefire in the region.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but has an independent government led by a majority group of ethnic Armenians.
