France: New Caledonia locals react as territory heads for independence vote
Locals of New Caledonia, a French territory in the pacific, voiced their opinions about the upcoming independence referendum from France on Saturday.
"I am not for independence, I prefer to be attached to France. I feel French and local and I am worried about tomorrow because if the 'Yes' wins, there are no clear plans from pro-independence people," said a local in Noumea whose opinion and worries were shared by others.
Others seemed indifferent on the eve of the Sunday vote with one saying, "For me If the 'Yes' wins, nothing will change and everything will remain as before the referendum."
As many as 180,000 locals could vote in the referendum which could usher in the birth of a new nation in the Pacific.
