India: Thousands take to Delhi streets to demand justice for gang-rape victim
Thousands of protesters made of up students, women, and political leaders gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Friday to demand justice after the gang rape and murder of a woman in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh.
According to the police in Hathras district, four men have been arrested and for rape and murder in the 19-year-old's case. The anger of the public further developed after allegations that the victim's body had been cremated by Hathras police without receiving consent from the family of the victim. The police and district magistrate denied the accusations, and say they had the family's consent.
"Why was the body burned? If there was no rape why were they in such a hurry to burn the body? Why did no second post-mortem take place? Why did they burn the body with petrol? If they were not afraid of anything, if no rape happened then why was the body not given to the family and burned abruptly?" stated student activist Anjali.
The protesters demanded Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's resignation alleging increased violence against women.
"All over the country it is happening but the rate at which the violence against women, particularly the sexual violence and the unprecedented cruelty towards the women being raped is happening in UP [Uttar Pradesh] more frequently. So, that is why the government is a fascist government that don't believe that women have equal rights, women are equal citizens," exclaimed National Federation of Indian Women General Secretary Annie Raja.
