Armenia: French journalists wounded in Nagorno-Karabakh arrive in Yerevan

Two French journalists who were seriously wounded in the fighting in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region were transported on Friday to the Armenian capital Yerevan.

French Ambassador to Armenia Jonathan Lacote visited the Le Monde journalists at Erebouni Medical Centre, announcing that they will soon be evacuated to France.

“We are very grateful to those who have been involved in the treatment of these two journalists, both in Stepanakert and now in Yerevan. We’re very happy to know that they are arriving in Yerevan, we are very happy to know that they will be able to leave for France within an hour,” he said.

The Le Monde journalists were injured in the town of Martuni in Nagorno-Karabakh while covering the ongoing clashes. According to Armenian authorities, the area was targeted by the Azerbaijani army, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan claims that Armenia shelled the area.

On Thursday, French President Macron ordered a medical jet to evacuate both journalists, who were injured alongside two Armenian journalists.

Fighting in the disputed region broke out on Sunday when Azeri and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported. Both sides blame each other for the escalation and report of thousands of casualties.

Yerevan has accused Turkey of directly supporting Azerbaijan in the fighting, a claim denied by Baku.

On Thursday, Macron and his Russian and US counterparts, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, issued a joint statement calling for an immediate ceasefire between Yerevan and Baku.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but has an independent government led by a majority group of ethnic Armenians.
