Armenia: We’re considering recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh – Armenian PM

Armenia, Yerevan

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan spoke at the press conference in Yerevan, Wednesday, following the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“Speaking of the possibility to recognise the Nagorno-Karabakh [republic], as I already said, we have such an option on the agenda, we are considering a strategic cooperation agreement between Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh [republic] as well as a security and defence cooperation agreement. We are discussing the option. The decision whether to take these steps or not will be made depending on some issues,” he said.

Pashinyan added he hadn't discussed the possibility for Russia to intervene in the conflict. “It wasn’t on the agenda,” he concluded.

Speaking of the negotiations with the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the Armenian leader said Yerevan was in “close contact” with the organisation. “To start or not to start the procedures is a completely different issue,” he added.

Fighting in the disputed region broke out on Sunday when Azeri and ethnic Armenian soldiers exchanged fire. It's been the heaviest clashes in the region since 2016 with dozens of casualties reported. Both sides blame each other for the escalation.

Earlier Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged to stand by Azerbaijan in the conflict.

The Nagorno-Karabakh region is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but has an independent government led by a majority group of ethnic Armenians.
